Shiny Happy City - a participatory exhibition

An invitation to think outside the box! From 19th to 26th of May 2013

The Art in the Park team has developed a unique treat for our visitors: packaging materials, kindly donated over the last weeks, have been carefully prepared using papier-mâché techniques, providing a blank “canvas” for our imagination to go run wild.

Come share your ideas and help create our dream city!

Let’s be inspired by themes such as: community, sustainability, “be the change you want to see in the world”, all-inclusive spaces, cultural diversity etc.

Materials will be available for two weeks or until they run out. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please ring/text 0861099084 for opening times.

For more information please contact project manager Patricia Gurgel-Segrillo artinthepark@gurgel-segrillo.com

Original drawings for the Ghost of Shandon- graphic novel by illustrator and author Alan Corbett

The Ghost of Shandon is a graphic novel and children's book based mainly in 18th Century Cork City. This is a fascinating period of Cork’s history in which French Huguenots, Dutch merchants, British land owners and the local Irish made Cork the second largest port in the world.

The city serves as a backdrop for the tale of two children, Ronan and Aisling. Ronan lived in a lighthouse in modern day Castletownbere, West Cork but moves to the city when his father loses his job. Bullied in his new home, he comes in contact with Aisling, who works as a maid for a Dutch merchant family on Tuckey Street in 18th century Cork and their adventure begins.

The original drawings as well as the book are available for purchase at Art in the Park.

En.cruz.ilha.das - urban legends and magic crossroads Exhibition of wearable art, drawings and prints

The interlaced silver and gold ribbon Patricia Gurgel-Segrillo uses to create her wearable art series  hint of the social fabric of Rio de Janeiro State, where Patricia grew up.
A place where strands of wealth and poverty, ethics and violence,
culture and corruption are constantly intertwining.

Upon moving to Cork City she has been creating a group of drawings, deepening her exploration on cross-cultural identity, empowerment and femininity- subjects which are a constant in her work.

The drawings series has been influenced by the afro-Brazilian orixasThese are
deities or divinities, which are such a great part of Brazilian culture.
Patricia’s representations portray them as ancient (or maybe futuristic?)
heroes and sages, inhabitants of the urban landscapes, full of magic as well
as power and a profound sense of self-worth, of dignity.
