Google+ Art in the Park - Cork City: Alan Corbett

Alan Corbett

Im an illustrator and writer from Cork City, Ireland. I graduated with an MA in Children’s Book Illustration from the Cambridge School of Art in the UK in 2010. The MA was an 18 month course that concluded with a group exhibition at the prestigious Illustration Cupboard Gallery in London. Previous to this I completed a BA in Graphic Design at the Cork IT.

I take inspiration for my work from classical Irish picture book illustrators such as Harry Clarke, Richard Doyle and Daniel Maclise. I enjoy working on projects of a slightly dark nature and I particularly enjoy depicting historical scenes. My dream commission would be to illustrate a Bram Stoker’s Dracula picture book.
In 2008, I was selected by the Computer Arts magazine graduate showcase in illustration.
In 2010, I particpated in illustration exhibitions at the Ruskin Gallery Cambridge and the Wandsford Quay Gallery Cork. I was also commissioned to illustrate art work for Irish film Elipse and the October Elevens production of a Christmas Carol.

In 2011, I was invited onto the creative panel for the 6th annual Dragon of Shandon Samhain Parade in Cork. I designed props and illustrated billboard advertsining for the Halloween event. Cork Community Art Link also published a comic I illustrated based on 19th Century Cork character Baron Sploasco for the parade.

I am currently in the process of producing my first children’s book/graphic novel, Ghost of Shandon. The book is being published by Cork based book publishers Onstream Publishing and is due for release in the Summer of 2012. The Ghost of Shandon is 64 pages long, 5000 plus words and contain’s nearly 200 illustrations. The story is set predominantly in 18th Century Cork and has taken over 18 months to complete. A selection of greetings cards with scenes from the book are available in the gift shop of the Crawford Art Gallery Cork.
