Google+ Art in the Park - Cork City: P Gurgel-Segrillo

P Gurgel-Segrillo

In her native Brazil, in London and San Francisco, visual artist and arts facilitator Patricia Gurgel-Segrillo (gur – gel / se – gri – lo) has trained and worked in a diverse range of disciplines, through oil painting, silk-screen printing, film animation, hat design, gemology, ergonomics, interior accessories and jewellery design and manufacture.

Patricia has developed the weaving techniques in silver and gold that she uses to create unique jewellery pieces throughout 25 years of jewellery-making.

P Gurgel-Segrillo's contemporary jewellery series have been exhibited in galleries in the UK, Ireland, Japan, Brazil and the USA and are sold worldwide.

Parallel to the jewellery-making, Patricia has produced two 'green design' sculpture series - contemporary sculptural lighting and free standing pieces designed and made in collaboration with artists working in wood and glass and inspired by the elements water and air.

In 2004 Patricia completed an MA Degree in Design Studies from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, in London, where she lived for 8 years and established her design-craft-art practice: figurative pencil drawings, tradigital art, fine art prints, and is working on a series inspired by The Human Rights, womanhood and cross-cultural identity.

'Design - Craft - Art : I try to blur their boundaries... good thought and good design that should go into the piece, the hand-crafted aspect and the skill which it requires as well as my artistic expression- all three are as important to me.'

Patricia Gurgel-Segrillo is a member of CRAFTed: Crafts Council of Ireland's Education Panel which aims for the development and delivery of training programmes relating to the Visual Arts curriculum at primary level.

In Art in the Park Patricia will be acting as artist in residence and project manager.

'En.cruz.ilha.das - urban legends and magic crossroads' Exhibition of wearable art, drawings and prints

The interlaced silver and gold ribbon Patricia Gurgel-Segrillo uses to create her wearable art series hint of the social fabric of Rio de Janeiro State, where Patricia grew up. A place where strands of wealth and poverty, ethics and violence, culture and corruption are constantly intertwining.

Upon moving to Cork City she has been creating a group of drawings, deepening her exploration on cross-cultural identity, empowerment and femininity- subjects which are a constant in her work.

The drawings series has been influenced by the afro-Brazilian orixas. These are deities or divinities, which are such a great part of Brazilian culture. Patricia’s representations portray them as ancient (or maybe futuristic?) heroes and sages, inhabitants of the urban landscapes, full of magic as well as power and a profound sense of self-worth, of dignity.
